Inside The Treatment Room

Your Skin Has Seasons Too: The Autumn Reset

As the weather shifts, your skin often shifts with it. Cooler temps, lower humidity, indoor heating, wind and changes in routine can affect hydration and the skin barrier. You don’t necessarily need more products, but a different approach may be needed.

WHY YOUR SKIN CHANGES IN THE FALL: TEMP, HUMIDITY, INDOOR HEAT:
Cooler air holds less moisture, which lowers humidity and pulls hydration straight from your skin, especially if your barrier is already impaired from summer fun. Indoor heating pulls more moisture from the air, which then gets pulled from your skin. When it gets colder, oil production slows so your skin produces less oil, and the barrier gets even more damaged. This is why I sometimes recommend a humidifier in your bedroom during the winter so that your skin loses less moisture.

The Skins Barrier’s Role

THE SKIN BARRIER’S ROLE-WHY DRYNESS,TIGHTNESS, SENSITIVITY, AND IRRITATION SUDDENLY APPEAR:
When the barrier gets damaged, it reduces the skins ability to protect itself and will begin to feel dry, tight and sometimes irritated. This may mean it is time to switch out some products for things that will help your skin hold more moisture.

WHEN TO SWAP CLEANSER/Introduce Richer Products:
If your skin tends to get dry and tight feeling, you can be proactive and change your cleanser to something less stripping or add a richer moisturizer, when the temperature begins to drop or when you begin turning on your indoor heating.

Hydration vs. Moisture

Hydration infuses water into the skin cells to make them plump and bouncy. Moisture creates a protective barrier on top of the skin to stop water from evaporating. Some people will need both, especially during the fall and winter months. In many cases, I recommend a hydrating serum and then a cream to lock it in. Layering like this really helps push the hydration and moisture into the skin.

SIGNS TOO MANY ACTIVES: When your barrier shows signs of impairment, see last months blog for more info on this, but it is often characterized by tight, dry, itchy, red, or irritated skin; you will want to back off on actives. Barrier impairment can happen any time of year.

RETAIL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FALL/WINTER: I love layering hydrating products in the winter. I always love and recommend the beta serum, the milk boosting serum is good for layering as well. The Rich M Cream and Cleansing Milk are winter favorites. I also anticipate the P-fecta Barrier serum and Barrier Cream and the PDRN Cream being favorites this year.

Treatments for Fall/Winter

Inflacure always has my heart. I also love the Beta Glucan Mask or a nanoinfusion for some extra hydration. If your barrier is intact, the fall and winter is a great time for corrective treatments, like a green sea peel or some lesser spicule treatments or light chemical peels.
